Match Preview Rishworthians' focus falls on Sunday on its successful under-17s side, who take on Guisborough in the quarter final of the Yorkshire Cup at Copley (KO 12.30pm). They will be hoping to complete a record-breaking season for the club, which has seen a brilliant league campaign and promotion for the senior side. The club won all its 22 league games and, in its total of 31 matches, beat the points scoring record, registering 1,039 points to eclipse the previous highest, set in the 2000-2001 season of 1,004. In addition player coach Jamie Bloem has also smashed the individual record, scoring 355 points, beating Darren Wade's record of 282 set up seven years ago.
Official Rugby Football Union figures show Rishworthians have the best defensive league record of any team in the country. They are one of 17 teams with a 100 per cent league record, but in their 22 games, they only conceded 71 points at an average of 3.23 points a game. The next best was Market Harborough with an average of 4.11 from their 18 games. Skipper Gary Morris said: "It's been a fantastic season for us. We have played some exciting and attractive rugby at times. "But much of that success has to be attributed to the coaching we have received not only from Jamie, but from John Clough, who has also played a big part in the success of the under-17s. "The players have responded fantastically to this. There have been some outstanding performances throughout the season from both forwards and backs and we are hoping to build on this when we step up a division. "We have a thriving junior set-up and we are all looking forward to seeing some of those young players coming through next season to reinforce the senior side, which is already liberally sprinkled with teenagers."
Results Saturday 26th April Rishworthians Dads & Lads 17 - 36 Heath XV Rishworthians Dads and Lads v Heath should've been Dads and Lads but they pulled a fast one. The build up to the game showed how the two teams prepared for the day. Rishworthians created the days of old by turning up short, not having anyone in charge, and subsequently found themselves in the Dressing room saying, "Yeah I'll play there, I,ve not been there before". Heath meanwhile turned up with a squad containing a number of 2nd teamers, some wily old pensioners, a Team Manager(!), and went onto the pitch early to practice backs and forwards moves. The game kicked off in glorious sunshine, dazzling Rishworthians with the reflections of the Heathens heads, and it was the visitors who used the Ref's interesting use of the forward pass law, and clumsy handling, to fashion the first few attacks of the game.
When Rishworthians got fed up of trying to let them score, we passed the ball to the Flanagans, who showed them how to do it. Heath were obviously quick learners, as they scored three unanswered tries, all off forward passes, and with the Rishworthians in the throes of taking off the U17s to protect them for the following day. Half time came, and again it was like the good old days, a talk from Hoppy that no one listened to. Heath went under the posts, and did chin ups on the crossbar to kill some time. The second half continued with Heath exploiting the Refs limited vision, (unless a Black shirt was involved) to dominate possession, but Rish kept the scores down until the turning point of the game. The ref made a horrendous error of judgement, in his mistaken belief that the Rishworthian No.8 had pulled their scrum half into a ruck, when he quite clearly only interfered with the pass. A try followed the penalty, but Rishworthians, stung by the injustice, brought on a few subs in the backs and started to run Heath ragged. The last 20 minutes was punctuated by breathless men in red asking the ref how much time was left. Sadly he couldn't quite see his watch, as it was in front of him, so we carried on. Two fantastic tries came the Rishes way, who had produced the only three tries of the game that were skillful and did not break any laws of the game. After the game we all retired to the bar, where the ref and the Rishworthian No 8 seemed engrossed in techncalities for some period of time. It was rumoured that the conversation ended with the referee mumbling "sorry". Man of the Match for Rishworthians was Hedley Stirk, for fearsome running, protecting my head from a stamping, and admitting that it was his Dad who was propping. Man of the Match for Heath was Cockroft, ho seemed to be involve din everything throughout the game. Rodders

Review of 2006 - 2007 Season
The season will be remembered for the impact of the Junior Section to slowly bear fruit, but what a season of contrasting fortunes! Old Rishworthian RUFC looked forward to the challenge of league rugby and felt that the 1st team would be promotion contenders in Yorkshire 5 North West after coming 3rd and 4th in the previous seasons.
In fact, after some difficult friendly matches, the team lead again by Gary Morris, ended October top of the league having played four and winning three scoring over 141 points and conceding 68. The start also included two games in the EDF Junior Vase, one against Helsby who were defeated 66-0 and Hullensians (the eventual winners of Yorkshire 4) who beat us 21-12. Then disaster struck. Having lost two players to Halifax, others were injured or unavailable and the team struggled and did not win again until February. Gary Morris rallied his players however and considering the devastating effect of losing nine regular 1st team players, the team finished 7th in the league table. Three long serving players, Simon Wadsworth Alex Fearnley and Toby Wood retired at the end of the season. During the season 9 Players aged 18 or under were registered for the Club to play League Rugby and of these Nick Faulkner, Joe Billing and Wesley Aldridge were 1st team regulars.
The teams record for the season was P 22 W 7 D 1 L 14 Points For 346 Against 460. The number of games played is the lowest in the clubs history and reflects the shortage of players within the 1st team. The team did not play in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy against Knaresborough owing to a shortage of front row forwards. The club is now seeking players at open age level and are liasing with the school to see if any former rugby-playing pupils of Rishworth School are still living in the area. We Need You Urgently.
The second team entered the Division 5 Merit Table League and was ably lead by Chris Mitchell. The team fielded regular sides in all but two Saturdays up to the middle of November. Shortages in the 1st team meant that a number of second team players were brought in, probably too soon, but notable victories were gained over Heath 3rd XV, Wibsey and Ossett. The teams record for the season was: P 17 W 7 L 10 For 204 Against 251.
Seal of Approval Year 2 Award During the close season the Old Rishworthian RUFC was awarded the year 2 Active Sports Seal of Approval and Clubmark accreditation by the RFU. This prestigious award is based on a three-year award system in which a club is assessed on its ability to provide a safe, effective, child-friendly club environment. The Award is indicative of the quality of provision the club offers, and its commitment to the continued development of young rugby players. The success at the club is down to the hard work of all volunteers whether they are committee members, kitchen staff, ground staff or other helpers. The need to encourage more helpers is so important to the survival of the club.
Mike Catt presents the year 1 seal of approval to Under 17 captain Rogan Costello Mike Ford (left) who's son attends Rishworth School organised a two day visit for the under 17's to watch the England squad training at Bath. The opportunity was taken for the club to receive the Seal of Approval from England player Mike Catt.
