Under 17's
Yorkshire County Players
Fifty two players from across Yorkshire met in Wakefield on Sunday to enable the Yorkshire selectors to finalise a 30 man squad to represent the County at Under 17's level this season. After an initial warm up and coaching session, three periods of 25 minutes were played to give all the trialists the opportunity to impress and gave spectators and selectors some rugby of a very high standard to enjoy.

Seven of the players came from the West Yorkshire district development squad including Luke Brocklehurst (Hipperholme Grammar School) and Danny Chappell (Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School) who both play club rugby at Old Rishworthians. Luke gave a good account of himself plying his trade at prop forward scoring a try and Danny showed his skills at inside centre.

When the matches were over a nailbiting 30 minutes were spent waiting for the selectors decision and all present were aware that 22 young talents would leave in disappointment. As the final squad was named the tension was over and the selected squad were left to the formalities and introductions as the unlucky ones left for home. Brocklehurst and Chappell were both included in the squad and will represent the County against North Wales, Lancashire and Cheshire in the coming months. Congratulations to both Calderdale boys in their selection and a big thank you to their coaches past and present within schools and clubs in Halifax. Danny and Luke join under 17 squad members Edward Cockroft, Chris Dyson, Christus Ferneyhough and Gilbert Gregory who have also represented Yorkshire.
