Junior Rugby Continuum

Junior rugby is played to a set of RFU rules known as the continuum. A child's age is determined by their age on the 1st September.

The under 13 - 18's game is played on a full size pitch and the full 15 a side game is introduced. The object of the game is to score a try (5 points) and conversion (2 points). The scrum is made up of eight players from each team.

At under 13/14level a size 4 ball is used and they play 25 minutes each way. The hand-off/fend-off and kicking the ball is now permitted.

At Under 15 a size 5 ball is used and the playing time increased to 30 minutes each way

At Under 16, 17 and 18 level the playing time increases to 35 minutes each way. Players may now lift/support team mates in the lineout.

Junior Player Development

Whether you have come from our mini section, another rugby club or just decided to take up junior rugby it is our aim to develop your potential rugby skills. We do not want to be just another junior rugby club where players turn up to train or play a match then go home, we want to develop a players rugby ability as they progress through the junior age groups.

If you have come from our mini section or from another clubs mini section you will have developed all the basic skills. At junior level you will now start to play the full 15 a side game on a full size pitch. You will hopefully had the opportunity to play in both forwards and backs positions at mini rugby, now we want to find your best position in the 15 a side game, develop your rugby skills and fulfil your rugby aspirations.

In your first junior rugby year at under 13 level you may not know where you want to play or what level you wish to achieve be it a good club player or represent your district, county or North of England. However as you move up the age groups these desires will develop the more you play and move up through the junior age groups.

The player development process starts at the under 13 level with Player Development Sessions run in conjunction with the Regional Development Officer. Players from the junior clubs in the Yorkshire West Aire/Wharfe district area are invited to join in these selection sessions run by qualified RFU coaches to help you develop your skills. Selected players then join other players selected from Kirklees, Bradford and Craven areas to form a West Yorkshire Squad.

The West Yorkshire squad attend development sessions and play representative games against North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Central District. From these games district selectors will select a Yorkshire County squad.

The Yorkshire squad run training sessions and play representative games against Cumbria, Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire and Northumberland where county selectors will select a North of England squad.
If you do not make the district or county squads in your first season there are always opportunities to be selected the following seasons as your rugby skills and personal aspirations develop.

We have already had success with player development at Rishworthians with players representing West Yorkshire District, Full Yorkshire County Honours and one player making the North of England squad.

Take a look at the mini juniors honours board to see what has been achieved at Rishworthians in just a few seasons. Honours Board

Can You Help!!!!
Even though we have 30 coaches we still need to enlist help on the day with the odd training session, running touch and so on. But as the numbers in the mini/junior section continues to grow we need more parents to help on the day.

If you?d like to help on a more formal basis let us know. We will also provide courses for you if you would like to become a coach or a referee.

In addition we are always looking for more people to help with the administration of the section. This could be writing match reports, helping with registration or helping to run the club shop. If you can help please let us know.

Match report volunteers wanted
Now we are running under 13/14's, under 15/16's and under 17's we need additional volunteers to help write up a match report for each age group. Ideally we require one person for each age group and a couple of additional people to cover for weeks when people are away or to work a rota system.

All we require are the try scorers, match award winners plus the squad list so everyone gets a mention in the local paper and on the web site. If you wish to add extra comments about the game so much the better. The reports can then be e-mailed to davebutler@orrufc.co.uk
