Under 7's The Young Guns
Young Guns blood more promising Micros
The Young Guns welcomed near neighbours Halifax to Copley on a cold and muddy morning. Many of the Halifax players were playing their first ever game of rugby and the Rish coaches took the opportunity to blood some debutants of their own. Charlie Reese, Charlie Harrison and James Kershaw stepped up from the Under 6’s to taste competitive rugby for the first time and didn’t look at all out of place. Jamie Doyle also played played half a game on his first ever visit to Old Rishworthians taking some great tags early on. Completing this young and inexperienced line up were Jake Smith, William Davidson, Luke Haigh and Charlie Rushworth to add a bit of familiarity to the team.
Game 1 Rishworthian Young Guns 15 - 13 Halifax
The Young Guns started well with three un answered tries through Jake Smith, Luke Haigh and Charlie Reece. Very sportingly James Kershaw played the first half for Halifax to help even the up the numbers, and he quickly got on the score sheet going the length of the field and passing most of his Rishworthians friends on the way. Halifax scored a couple more tries before Rishworthins hit top gear with William Davidson scoring four first half tries and Charlie Harrison picking up a super try on debut. At half time Rish led Halifax by 8 tries to 6.
Rish started the second half as they had finished the first with Jake Smith and William Davidson running in three further tries each. Halifax continued to be competitive running in some fine tries of their own with Luke Haigh helping them out for the last 10 minutes allowing James to return to his own team. With the score looking close on the last play of the game, William Davidson scooted down the wing to secure victory giving the Young Guns a well deserved 15-13 win.
Jake Smith’s experience in a young team gave him the Man of the Match award, and Charlie Lovering backed up a great debut last week to win the top tagger award. The effort award was given to James Kershaw for giving the Halifax team 100% commitment whist helping them to field a team. A special mention also to Luke Haigh who did the same towards the end of the match.
Squad: Charlie Reece, Charlie Harrison, Jake Smith, Luke Haigh, William Davidson, Charlie Lovering, Jamie Doyle, James Kershaw, Charlie Rushworth
Scorers: William Davidson 8, Jake Smith 4, Luke Haigh, Charlie Reece & Charlie Harrison. 1 try for Halifax for James Kershaw.
Man of Match - Jake Smith
Top Tagger - Charlie Lovering
Effort Award - James Kershaw
2010 - 11 Season - The Under 7's
This season's new under 7's squad start playing a full season of competitive mini rugby.
Last season they were learning the game in the micros squad and joining in with the under 7's to get some competitive
match experience ready for this coming season. As this seasons under 6's reach their 6th birthday they may play competitive rugby and join in with this squad.
With a squad of 14 players we hope to field 2 sides most weeks. This allows everyone in the squad to play competitive games. The squad inreases in numbers as the season progresses with the 6 year old Micros coming up to join in te group for the season.
Any new players under 7 who would like to play mini rugby are very welcome to come down to Copley on Sunday mornings during the season when they are training or have home games. Please look at the fixtures list to check the minis are at home. With 2 teams everyone gets a game

The under 6's (The micros) had a very successful and enjoyable season. With new players arriving at the club throughout the year the squad has grown to a very healthy 20 players.
The under 6 section, known as the micros allows children aged 4 and 5 to start learning how to play tag rugby. They do not play competitive games until they reach their sixth birthday then they can join in with the under 7's squad and play competitive games. They train on Sunday mornings and occasionally travel with the under 7's to train with the opposition.
This season Neal Lumb, Darren Grogan, Guy Laurie and Warren Doyle coached the squad. with four coaches we were able to split the squad into 2 groups, the under 5's and under 6. As the players reach their sixth birthday they have joined in with the under 7's squad to play competitive games. All those players have performed well with several picking up man of the match awards. The highlight being able to take part in the Harrogate Festivals as part of the squad and winning the Festival under 7 trophy. Taking this into consideration the players did themselves and the club proud.
The micros have trained every week and during the season we invited Huddersfield YMCA micros to come down and join in a training session and play tag rugby. The session worked well and we returned the compliment by travelling to YM for a session. We plan to find another suitable club to join in next season. The basis of next seasons under 7 squad is now in place with 2 parents willing to coach the squad. We will look for another 2 parents to help the coaches as we feel this squad needs 4 coaches to develop the players.
