Match Report Sunday 8th April - Yorkshire Cup semi final

In near perfect playing conditions Rishworthians made up for last seasons semi final defeat by producing their best display of the season to cruise into the Yorkshire Cup Final.

Rishies started well and camped in the Scunthorpe half with a series of pick and drives from their forwards. They opened the scoring by taking clean line out ball and setting up a forward drive to the Scunthorpe line where Ethan Pollard peeled off from the back of the maul to power over from a few metres out. Kian Sutcliffe added the conversion.

Scunthorpe's pack started to put together several phases of play and worked their way into the Rishies 22 and then set up a big driving maul to cross the try line and touch down mear the posts. A successful conversion levelled the scores 7 all.

From the restart Rishies began to take control and soon took the lead again. From a line out clean ball taken by Callum Bell set up a forward drive which sucked in Scunthorpe's pack. Scrum half George Wright released his back line and ball was swiftly moved out to Kian Stewart who was half tackled but managed to twist and turn out of the tackle to scamper away for an unconverted try.

The home forwards were now playing with more confidence and put in some big tackles to prevent Scunthorpe getting a grip on the game. Rishworthians backs were seeing more of the ball and making good ground with ball in the hand. From a breakout by the backs into Scunthorpe's 22 the Rishworthians forwards took over control and set up a driving maul to the try line for Toby Muscat-Baron to get the vital touch down. Sutcliffe added a conversion to pur Rish in the dring seat at half time.

Half Time Rishworthians 19 - 7 Scunthorpe

After the break it was the visitors who took the initiative, playing tight rugby around the breakdown. Rishies were forced to tackle hard and counter ruck, to prevent Scunthorpe scoring. Rishies weathered the Scunthorpe pressure with some excellent defending and a breakout by the backs found themselves back in the Scunthorpe red zone. A quick Rishies tap penalty setup the forwards to try and punch a hole in the defence but the visitors held firm. A switch of play out to the backs found Kian Stewart who ghosted through to score. Sutcliffe converted.

Rishies then settled and through some excellent support play, direct running and offloads, created several phases of dynamic rugby. With the Scunthorpe pack beginning to tire, Rishies setup another forward drive from clean line out ball for Pollard to crash over for his second try.

Rishies were now in the ascendancy looking after the ball and retaining possession. Following another period of pressure in the visitors 22 the ball was spun out along the back line for Kian Sutcliffe to cross and then convert his try.

Rishworthians now wait for the winners of Brodleians and Sheffield to join them in the final scheduled for 22nd April at Moortown.
