Rishworthians bounce back from cup defeat to win at Yarnbury Match report Sunday 4th October Friendly From the off Rishworthians were penalised time after time for a variety of minor offences many unseen by any of the spectators, however, the under 16's stuck to their game plan and closed down the home side who tried to play a running passing game. Playing uphill in the first half, Rishworthians found it hard to get out of their own half and repelled the Yarnbury forwards time after time. As Yarnbury came again a loose pass found its way to Jack Ledgard who kicked upfield for Ryan Percival to kick on again and touch down. However, the referee being 50 metres behind play disallowed the try and awarded yet another penalty to the home side. Not finding touch Rish ran the ball back and drove close to the Yarnbury line. From a resulting scrum Vitali Seleznev picked the ball up from the back of the scrum and barged over. As the home side congregated under their posts for the conversion the ball was hurled at Rishworthians No 12 who verbally retaliated at the player and the referee penalised Kelly by not allowing him to take a conversion. This left spectators from both sides completely bemused. Questioning why he wasn't allowed a conversion the referee sent Kelly to the sin bin 8 minutes before the break. Great tackling in all areas kept Yarnbury out however the numbers told shortly before the break and the home side nipped over to level the scores. Scores level at the break 5 - 5. Half Time: Yarnbury 5 - 5 Rishworthians Yarnbury came out determined to run the ball more in the early part of the second half and resulted in a try out wide giving them a 10 - 5 lead. Ten minutes of the second half had passed before the No 12 was allowed back on the field. Now behind Rish were more determined than ever and kick chases turned round Yarnbury time after time who running uphill found it hard to gain many metres. With 10 minutes to go another kick through from Kelly spun back nicely into the arms of Ryan Percival who rounded the full back to take the scores level. Kelly stroked the ball over from the right hand touchline nudging the visitors back in front at 12 - 10. Rish ensured they were not going to be beaten and doggedly closed down all attempts by Yarnbury to bust through. As the whistle finally went Rish new they had deserved this win despite a 35 to 5 penalty count against them. Man of the Match was Gareth Hayes, however, each and every member of the team played their part today and gave more than 100%. Final Score: Yarnbury 10 - 12 Rishworthians This was one of the best performances by the under 16's and demonstrates the continual improvement. The rucking and mauling was good with the forwards putting together several phases of play and the backs having the confidence to move the ball out wide. It was also pleasing to see a squad of 22 players turning out and with 2 good wins out of 2 they can go into next weeks cup game in a positive frame of mind. Well done lads Man of the Match: Gareth Hayes.
A side that beat Rish heavily last year was tamed by a more determined and stronger willed visiting opponent despite being on the receiving end of an unjustified penalty count against them.Click here to view Moortown website
