Superb Rishworthians reach Bowl Final

Match report Sunday 21st March Yorkshire Bowl Semi Final
After Whitby, Scarborough, Malton and Norton Rishworthians faced another East Yorkshire club in the Bowl semi final. This was a big occasion for the U16s from both sides and the two teams rose to it to provide a good-tempered, physical game of rugby with Rishworthians deservedly running out winners.

Rishworthian's dominated the game from the off with the forwards taking the game to Bridlington, putting their pack under pressure in the loose and overpowering them at set pieces. Bridlington had a short spell in the first ten minutes when they started to get into their rhythm and Rishworthians early dominance nearly came to nothing as the visitors went close to scoring a try. Rishworthians soon gained the upper hand and pressure in the visitors half yielded two penalties in quick succession the second of which Kelly slotted over to open the scores.

With so much good possession from all phases of the game, the forwards started to build a platform for the backs to move the ball and as the game went on, so the chances came thick and fast with Bottomley and Kelly unlucky not to go over for the first try of the match. That honour went to Zientek who scudded in from the wing following quick ball from a ruck. The try went unconverted and at half-time, the score didn't do justice to the way Rishworthians were playing.

Half-time: Rishworthians 8 - 0 Bridlington

The visitors had come with a lively, vocal group of supporters which made for a good cup atmosphere and with such a close score-line at half-time they still had plenty to shout about. Rishworthians, however, had other ideas and they set about turning their forward dominance into points. A pick up from the base of the scrum saw Rishworthians No. 8 set the ball for a series of pick and drives with Broadbent's strength taking him over for a try to open the score up to 13-0. Again Bottomley went close a few minutes later and it wasn't long before the scrums, rucks and mauls took their toll on the visitors with Rishworthians second row, Brierley, driving over for his first try this season. Kelly added the conversion.

With a twenty point lead and their one substitute used, Rishworthians went down to 14 players for the last quarter as captain, Brad Fowles, went off with a nasty ankle injury. This could have been a nervous time for the home team but the forwards kept up their work rate and the home team soaked up some good pressure from Bridlington. Broadbent - the forward of the match - broke from his own half and set up a ruck on the visitors 22. Quick clean ball gave Ledgard a chance to show his class with a sweetly struck (J Wilkinson style) drop goal to put the game beyond Bridlington.

Bottomley thought he'd scored a well deserved try a few minutes later but it was ruled out for a toe in touch but Broadbent consolidated an excellent win to crash over for a crashing try with the last play of the game. Kelly converted and the U16s secured the club's first youth Final. They now face yet another East Yorkshire club Driffield in the Final on 25th April.
