Rishworthians produce a good second half performance

Match report Sunday 25th October Friendly
Half-term holidays meant a number of key players missing on both sides. Fortunately, Rishworthians were able to drum up enough players for a team and supply Bradford & Bingley with three lads to make up a full side.

The first wet and windy Sunday of the season, a number of players playing out of position and a rotation of Rishworthians players into the Bees side made for a faltering match with some periods of really scrappy play highlighted with excellent moves on both sides.

All in all, Rishworthians were too good for the visitors and whilst the Bees did well territorially in the first half, Rishworthians's pack started to dominated possession in most phases of play. Better handling all round and fewer infringements would have seen the home team clock up a healthy first half lead.

As it was, the only points of the half went to birthday boy Bottomley who ran in a sizzling try from out on the wing. Windy conditions meant the try went unconverted. If Rishworthians had managed to move the ball wide more often, both wingers could have had a field day but Bradford and Bingley fought hard and tackled well, forcing errors from the Rishworthians boys.

Half Time: Rishworthians 5 - 0 Bradford & Bingley

The second half was one where Rishworthians began to dominate territory and possession for large parts of the half and with the exception of one period of sustained pressure by the Bees, the visitors never really looked like upsetting the home team.

The second half also saw a couple of lengthy stoppages for injuries with Watkins leaving the pitch with a head injury. Once play resumed, Rishworthians put pressure on the Bees in their 22 and a well won scrum saw Higinbottom power over for his first of two tries. Kelly's conversion opened the score to 12-0.

The next period of play saw Rishworthians defending in their own 22 and the Bees playing some good rugby trying to force their way over for their first points of the day. Under pressure, both teams started to show indiscipline earning them a yellow card apiece with Illingworth the culprit for the home team. Higginbottom's second try came from a surging break from his own 22 by Hayes and the resulting scrum saw a good move finished off by the back row forward. Kelly converted to take the score to 19-0 to Rishworthians.

Rishworthians were fully in-charge from this point on and only some good last ditch defending by the visitors kept the score down. Rishworthians were rewarded for the dominance of their forwards when Cowey made a darting break from a scum and support from the pack saw Fowles crash over for five points. Ledgard slotted home the conversion.

Final Score: Rishworthians 26 - 0 Bradford & Bingley
