Match Report Sunday 24th December - Yorkshire Cup Semi Final

Rishies under 16’s made it to the Yorkshire Cup final for the second year running after a hard fought and tense final at Copley.

Defending champions Rishies started well but couldn’t turn possession into points and against the run of play Doncaster broke down the blind side with flanker Tweddle opening the scoring. With the try converted Doncaster went into a 7-0 lead. The Doncaster pack consisting of no fewer than four Carnegie Academy players were now starting to get the upper hand and after Rishies were caught offside at the breakdown the Doncaster stand off kicked the penalty in front of the goals to extend their lead to 10-0.

Half backs Tom Georgiou and Nathan Cullen continued to keep Rishies moving forward and this pressure was very nearly rewarded with a try for Olly Cash only for the referee to call play back for a forward pass. 10-0 at half time and Rishies had it all to do but coaches Paul Stewart and Andy O’Brien’s inspired half time team talk galvanised the Rishies team.

Rishies hit back with a well worked try from the forwards which lead to Gabe Moore crashing over after good work from Finn Greenwood and Haydn Faulkner. Finn Sutcliffe’s superb touchline conversion brought Rishies back into the game at 10-7.

With 10 minutes to go a sustained period of Rishies pressure saw the ball worked out wide. Quick ball from the ruck saw Asiece Lalli crash over from 5 yards out with the Rishies supporters erupting with joy. Cullen converted and Rishies moved ahead by 14-10.

With the clock ticking down Rishies defended admirably snuffing out wave after wave of Doncaster pressure marched into their second cup final. Olly Kenyon and Joe Hallos were magnificent in defence as was Miller, Adams and O’Brien. It was left for Rishies to have the last word and scrappy ball in midfield was scooped up by Jacob Pollard who sprinted under the posts much to the jubilation of the large crowd. Cullen converted to make the score 21-10 and Rishies again marched into their second cup final.

Team Manager Chris Georgiou commented “ all credit to the players and coaching staff today as they were magnificent. This result is testimony to all the hard work that we have put in over the last 3 seasons and to reach the Yorkshire cup final for the second year running is a massive achievement not only for us but the club as a whole. The players showed great character today and a never say die attitude.
