Rishworthians record double over Yarnbury

Match report Sunday 14th February Friendly
Valentines Day with no love lost between these two sides. After a close match earlier in the season, Rish wanted to press home their advantage. Yarnbury had different ideas and within five minutes of the start, the visitors scored under the posts from their first meaningful attack. Rish were certainly looking rusty after so few recent matches but the key to their success this year has been their ability to fight back. And this they certainly did!

Rish pressure in Yarnbury's half yielded a series of penalties with Kelly punishing the infringements with a well taken penalty from close range. But despite plenty of possession from first and second phase ball, Yarnbury's defensive work prevented Rish from adding to the score for much of the half. It was the visitors who showed greater inventiveness with the ball in hand and poor tackling in the midfield allowed Yarnbury to open the points gap as they went over for a second converted try.

At 3-14 down the home team were in danger of losing their grip on the match and despite a long period dominating most phases of play, it was a long while before the points came. Rishworthian's hard work finally paid off with a crash try by Pollard converted by Kelly following a series of penalties against the visitors. The gap was closed further as Ledgard slotted a drop kick and the two sides then exchanged penalties with Kelly adding to his tally. The half closed with one point separating the two teams.

Half Time: Rishworthians 16 - 17 Yarnbury

Surprisingly, the second half saw only one further score and despite dominating possession and territory, Rishworthians were not able to break down the visitors. With one point in it any score would do for Rishworthians. With the forwards providing good ball for the backs from all phases of play it was only excellent defensive work throughout the half by Yarnbury's that kept the home team out.

Old Rishworthians finally made the break through as Yarnsbury conceded a penalty within kicking range and Kelly stepped up to take the home side into the lead for the first time in the match.

From here on in it was a nervy final few minutes as Rish struggled to hold onto their slim lead. Yarnbury put Rish under extreme pressure and in the last play of the match, forced an error at the lineout and were awarded a penalty. The long distance kick skimmed just wide of the upright and Rishworthian's breathed again.

Final Score: Rishworthians 19 - 17 Yarnbury
