Rishworthians under 16's had to dig deep to secure victory in the Yorkshire Plate Final against Wetherby. It was the Rishworthian Raiders who started well and opened the scoring with a try from centre Kian Stewart. The ball was overturned in the tackle and went wide to Stewart, who handed off a Wetherby defender and touched down under the posts. Jacob Tansey added the conversion to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.
Good work from the forward pack put the squeeze on Wetherby and they were forced into some handling errors. From a resulting scrum Raiders Number 8 Harry Soothill picked up and slipped a pass to Scrum Half George Wright. He dummied to pass and a gap opened up, which he quickly exploited and ran in to score in the corner. Wetherby then managed to get a foothold in the game and enjoyed a period of possession in the latter part of the first half. Stout defending though kept them out and Rishies took a 12-0 lead into half time.
Wetherby came out fired up in the second half and looked threatening in attack from the first whistle. Raiders made some promising breaks through Tyler Dupree and Ben Martin, but good Wetherby defence managed to stop any more tries being scored. Raiders were awarded a penalty though when a tackler failed to release the player on the ground, which the superb Jacob Tansey slotted for another 3 points.
Wetherby then cranked up the pressure even more, gaining lots of possession in the Raiders half and running in wave after wave of attacks. With six minutes to go, Wetherby finally breached the Rishworthian line and soon after the restart scored a second try to make it 15-10.
Raiders were regretting not taking an easy 3 points from a kickable penalty earlier in the second half, and when the referee sin binned Raiders flanker Eddie Taylor-Hughes, the signs were ominous. However, the Raiders team spirit came through in the final defensive effort. Spearheaded by forwards Tom Taylor, Ethan Pollard and Ben Ashton, the team put their bodies on the line to withstand the final barrage of Wetherby attacks and refused to let the men from North Yorkshire steal the plaudits.
There was relief and joy as the referee blew the final whistle and the Raiders efforts were rewarded by lifting the Yorkshire Plate.
