Rishworthians exit cup at the hands of last season's Plate Winners Match report Sunday 27th September Yorkshire Cup 1st round The game was evenly balanced in the early stages with some strong work from Rishworthians keeping the pressure on Whitby who nevertheless looked dangerous with strong running backs and a set of forwards who slowly asserted their dominance in set plays. Whitby won a scrum in Rishworthians's half and despite excellent tackling by the home team, the backs kept the ball alive and went over for a well-worked try. The visitors soon extended their lead with a quick penalty and a second try in the corner. With Whitby missing both conversions, Rishworthians were still in the game and continued to work hard to win possession and territory and came close to closing the gap with a penalty that drifted just wide. Half Time: Rishworthians 3 - 10 Whitby Whitby started the second half determined to press home their advantage and extended their lead with a penalty soon after the restart. Rishworthians improved in the set pieces in the second half and Whitby had to work hard to win ball but when they did, they demonstrated good handling and running skills and went over for two more tries despite some strong defensive work by the home team. At 3 - 23 Whitby could have opened up the scoring even further but good defensive work by Rishworthians kept the score down and a strong last ten minutes by the home side started to rattle the visitors. A brilliant run from his own line by Ledgard and good support from Broadbent and Collett led to a well deserved try for Rishworthians with Collett scoring under the posts for his second in two games. A quick conversion by Kelly narrowed the score and set-up a strong finish by the home side determined to get something out of an excellent match. Rishworthians worked hard right up to the final whistle and despite their first loss this season, acquitted themselves well against last season's Plate winners. Rishworthians now enter the Yorkshire Plate competition and hope to progress further this season. Final Score: Rishworthians 10 - 23 Whitby Man of the Match: Jack Ledgard.
This was a cracking cup tie between two committed teams with the strength and experience of Whitby winning out in the end - but they had to work hard for it. On the back of two good early season wins, Rshworthian's were determined to take the game to Whitby and early pressure from a good kick by Hayes saw the visitors give away a penalty within kicking range for Kelly who slotted over with ease.Click here to view Whitby website
