Match Report Sunday 9th September - Friendly

Rishworthian Sharks faced a tough opening game for the 2018-19 season away at Sheffield who always produced strong junior sides. Just before half time Sheffield were 19-5 up and looked the better side while Sharks looked a bit ring rusty. As the game progress Sharks began to shake off close season inactivity and took the lead 24-5 but Sheffield scored near the end to tie the game.

Sharks had the perfect start with an early try. Dominant forward play had Sheffield's defence on the back foot. Short ball to Sammy Hopkinson 20 metres from the line put him through a gap and he brushed of a couple of would be tacklers to score an unconverted try out wide.

This was a wake up call for Sheffield who restarted all fired up and replied with three unanswered tries to take a 19-5 lead.

Just before half time Sharks weathered the storm and put together several phases of possession to take them deep into the Sheffield half. From a line out the ball was passed through the back line and quick hands found Adil Haider on the wing to score an unconverted try out wide.

Half Time Sheffield 19 - 10 Rishworthians

Sharks forwards began to click and with several phases of pick and drive took the play down the middle of the field where Sheffield's defence was exposed and Denis Hopley crashed over at the side of ruck to score. Jacob Chadwick added the conversion.

As the game progress the Sharks began to find last seasons good form and good forward play created an overlap on the right hand side of the pitch. Fast play from the backs saw Seb Fahey join the back line wide out to score a touch line try. Chadwick added a fine touch line conversion to give Sharks a 24 -19 lead.

Sheffield managed to get a grip on the game and finished strongly with a try to tie the scores but the conversion was missed to Sharks relief. On balance, a draw felt about right but Sharks did very well to recover and come back into it and go ahead after being 19-5 down. Both teams played well for the first outing of the season.

Sharks men of the match were both forwards Benedict Freeman and Seth Bolton. The backs were kept quiet and only occasionally clicked.
