Match Report Sunday 25th February - Friendly

On a cold but clear Sunday morning local pride and bragging rights were up for grabs with Rishworthians meeting local rivals for the second time this year.

The early stages set the scene for the tone of the game with some enthusiastic and punishing defence from both sides. As the half went on Rishies controlled more and more possession until the hardworking home side finally cracked.

After the powerful Rishies pack forced a turnover at the scrum 20m from the Crocs line quick hands from scrum half Kai Greenwood found impressive fly half Josh Beck in space who took on the line before freeing prolific Centre Jake Parkinson who was almost unstoppable running at his opposition winger.

Rishies piled on the pressure later shortly after with what is fast becoming a trademark try for winger Leo Austin. Quick hands across the backline gave the athletic speedster the freedom he needed to cut across the defensive line and drive into the corner to score. The try was converted by Callum Sutcliffe to push into a 12-0 lead for the visitors.

In a dominant 2nd quarter period Rishies could, and should, have extended their lead by several further trys but resolute defence and a touch of greedy try-line fever foiled the lads efforts. Against the run of play a well taken Crocs try on the stroke of halftime gave the home side a much needed boost as the half finished at 5-12.

Half Time Crossleyans 5 - 12 Rishworthians

The Crossleyan boys started the second half with an obvious determination and it was only through some outstanding Rishies defence that their efforts were reppelled.

In a back and forth second half, territory and possession was evenly contested and it took another long range try from the flying Leo Austin to give the visitors a two try buffer.

In the final quarter the Crocs piled on the pressure and dominated field position, throwing everything they had at the Rishies defensive line. After grabbing a late try to push the scores to 12-19 it was a heroic defensive effort from the Rishworthians to keep the attackers at bay and grab a very well deserved win.
