3 early tries sinks under strength Rishworthians
Match report Sunday 18th October Friendly
Rishworthians travelled to Baildon with just 13 players missing Jake Sturman out with bruising for 4 weeks and Lewis Dawrant. Baildon looked to the move the ball at every opportunity and had an excellent fullback who made all the difference. We did not make the first tackle count and instead of going in low we far too often went high.
Rishworthians were a little bit unlucky with the first try with their number eight picking and driving when our number eight was still pushing in the scrum which created space for Baildon to go over under the post. From the subsequent kick off no Rishworth player touched the ball as Baildon ran in to score under the posts, the lads wondering what had hit them. This was repeated on the next kick off (or so it felt). 21-0 down with 5 minutes gone, to give the lads credit they then got their act together and start to take the game to Baildon and started to make the tackles which were being missed minutes earlier.
Rishies started to dominate the scrum and the lines outs and whilst the ball was kept tight things look encouraging, poor rucking and kicks not been chased allowed Baildon off the hook on a number of occasions. Kicks inevitably found Baildon?s fullback who always returned the ball with interest. No further score during the first half and everyone was making a huge effort.
Half time score Baildon 21 - 0 Rishworthians
Second half started poorly for the Rishies with another couple of quick converted tries conceded. Again this seemed to inspire the team and with Baildon backs still seeing plenty of the ball they never again breech our defence. The scrum and lineout still going strong the forwards were now making promising runs with more experience and better support play would have caused more damage. There was no lack of aggression and determination by the forwards and this continued throughout the second half.
Eventually all the effort paid off an aggressive run by Joe, quick rucking and support by the rest of the forwards allow Ben to feed Harvey Keighley Payne who with still lots to do made it to the line for a well deserved try. James Callighan added the conversion.
Rishies dominance at the lineout continued until Baildon ceased competing and attacked the catcher which resulted in a number of knock ons. The game end as it had been for the majority of the games as a very even contest. Overall a good performance considering that it was only our second game of the season and with a couple of good training sessions in the coming weeks we should be able to iron out a number of problem areas especially at the rucks.
