Old Rishworthian RUFC
Presentation Day 2010 - 2011
All good things come to an end as Rishworthians completed their 7th successful season of junior and mini rugby with the Minis end of season presentations held at the clubhouse on Sunday 8h May. This season has surpassed last years best ever season with tremendous success in the festivals. The minis haul of trophies/achievements has been the most successful seasons since it formation.
At Mini level they won the following
Mini/Junior Section Review
Each season sees the presentation day increase in numbers and last season the clubhouse was bursting at the seams. This season we decided to split the event into a minis presentation and a junior presentation. The minis event was held on Sunday 8th May for the under 6's - under 11's and the juniors on Friday evening 13th May. In addition we decided to stagger the minis presentations in order to fit everyone in starting with the micros then under 7's under 8's upwards. We also invited the u17's to the players dinner which proved to be a successful move.
The Minis
This season we ran 7 minis teams, namely under 5/6's, 7's, 8's, 9's, 10's, 11's and 12's. This year the minis numbers increased from 150 players to just over 170 players our largest number of minis to date. On the coaching front we met our target to have 3 coaches at each age group although the under 9's ended the season with just 2 coaches. The club wishes to thank all the coaches, parents and volunteers who give up their free time to allow these talented youngsters enjoy the game of rugby. The festival trophy haul was our biggest ever and with each age group winning more than one trophy demonstrates the continued improvement at all age groups
Under 5/6's The Micros
The Micros have been another big success this season, numbers have increased from 25 to just over 30 this season. We were very fortunate to find four more excellent coaches, Matthew Amer, Dean Mabson, Don McKenzie and Glyn Smith. All four have done a fantastic job keeping these youngsters attention for more than 5 - 10 minutes, let alone an hour. They have done a marvellous job demonstrated by the success of the elder players who reached their 6th birthday and joined in competitive games with the under 7's. Once more there is a ready made under 7's squad in place for next season. Matthew Amer and Don McKenzie will stay with the Micros to find some new dads to help with coaching the squad and so maintain the foundation of the minis section. Glynn will move up to the under 7's to join Steve Davidson and Dave Smith. Dean Mabson who travelled up from Shefield has set up a micros squad at Sheffield. We thank him for his committment and enthuiasmand wish him well at Sheffield. I understand Dean would like to maintain links with us and arrange joint sessions with Shefield. With the long spells of bad weather we introduced training sesions in the Rishworth school spors hall and we thank Helen Bower for arranging this for the Micros. Finally a big thank you to the parents for bringing their children along and suporting the club and coaches.
Under 7's The Young Guns
Darren Grogan gave a review of the season. The benefit of running a Micros squad is obviously paying dividends. For the third season running the Young Guns had a good season competing well in all their games. With a squad of 18 plyers pus some micros they were able to run 2 teams Sharks and Tigers most Sundays. They started the season well only losing five games before the Xmas break. The bad weather and Christmas break saw the young guns only play 1 game in 5 weeks although they were able to train in the school sports hall. This did not seem to disrupt the squad and hit a purple patch in January/ February only losing 3 of their 16 games. Things looked good for the final run into the festival season and brought back trophies from Brods, Sandal and Driffield Festivals. Ted Grogan set a new scoring record with 100 tries with Jon Baker fast on his heels with 97 tries. Well done boys.
They finished the season strongly only losing two of their remaining 15 games.
The playing record for the 2 teams was P 65 W 38 D 8 L 19 F 465 A 388.
The top try scorers were Ted Grogan 100, Jon Baker 87 Ethan Grogan 54.
Under 8's The Rams
Neal Lumb gave a review of the season. The under 8's had a slow start to the season only winning 3 games before the Christmas break. After Christmas the coaches decided to introduce a midweek training session and the results soon improved. Several new players joined the squad during the season and were often able to run two teams. In the festivals they had a great day at Keighley winning their festval and at Brodleians they won the bowl competition. Next season they throw away their tag belts and play 9 a side contact rubgy. Two parents Mike Gianotti and David Woodcock will also help coaching the squad. THe squad plan to start pre season training early so they have time to master tackling and learn how to ruck and maul.
They finished the season strongly in the festivals a playing record P 53 W 22 D 63 L 25 F 285 A 318.
The top try scorers were Ben Gianotti 42, Bobbie White 41, Joeseph Smallman 32.
Under 9's The Meercats
Paul Savage gave a review of the season. The under 9's enjoyed a very successful first season of contact rugby. They went on one of their unbeaten runs again and lost their first game of the season in February to Cleckheaton. At the end of the season they had only lost 3 games and ratled up 1055 points. Everything looked good for a good run in the festivals but they lost to Lymm in the final at Keighley, lost the 3rd place play off at Sandal Festival, drew the final at Brods Festival and drew the final at Driffield. Despite not winning outright they did pick up Silverware at Brods and Driffield. Its still a very imressive record.
The squad saw som new players join during the season and they now have a squad of 18 players not quite enough for 2 teams yet. Next season its contested scrums and line outs so there needs to be some forward coaching in these areas as the likes of Sandal, Otley Pocklington and West Park Leeds will again be tough nuts to crack next season. The squad will also enter the West Yorkshire District Festival next season plus the Brods and Sandal Festivals
The squad finished with a playing record P 45 W 33 D 9 L 3 F 1055 A 345.
The top try scorers were Tom Georgiou 79, Will Adams 35 Oliver Brian 28.
Under 10's The Destroyers
Grahame White gave a review of the season. The squad made a bright start to the season winning 15 games and losing 5 up to the Christmas break. Then they hit a bad patch in January and February only wining 2 games but they snapped out of their poor form at the end of March and had a strong finsh to the season just in time for the festival season. In the Festivals they won the West District Festival Shield, won the Driffield Festival Plate. Their best performanc was reserved for the Brodleians festival. They won their pool games to top the table and face Hull Ionians in the Cup Final but lost narrowly 5 - 10.
A number of new players joined the squad during the season and Kelvin Gillespie and Hugh Creasy joined the coaching team.
The squad finished with a playing record P 50 W 22 D 3 L 25 F 535 A 775.
The top try scorers were Nathan Donaldson 23, Jake Haynes 18, Tom Stott 17.
Under 12's The Reds
Steve Cockroft gave a review of the season. The season started wth a 94-0 win at Bradford and Bingley and a clean sweep at the District Festival without conceding a try. The Reds were joint winners at the Festival with Brodleians which meant they both went through to the 1st round of the Yorkshire Cup. Then came a blip in form with a 26-33 defeat at Huddersfield and repeat exit from the Cup 7-14 at West Park Leeds. There was a win at Keighley before going down to Sheffield and rivals Brodleians. Results picked up with 5 match winning run including a record 103-14 win over Rochdale. Festval season saw a below par performance at West Park, a 3rd place at Sandal Festival before winning the Plate trophy at Brodleians. The highlight of the season was winning the Alnwick Festival without conceding a try and rounding off the season at Driffield Festival to take the Salver despite missing several key players.
Several new players joined the squad during the season boosting the squad to 22 players and several more will be joining next season. The goal is to have a squad of 25 players ready for the new season. This seasons new recruits are developing well as they play catch up with the more experienced players. Next season the squad move up to junior rugby playing 15 side rugby on a full pitch and entry into the Yorkshire Cup/Plate competition.
The squad finished with a playing record P 39 W 26 D 2 L 11 F 771 A 351.
The top try scorers were Will Mc Donnell 33, Thomas Sweten 25, Jack Davis 19.
Under 13's The Red Backs
Mick Bruce gave a review of the season. The move up to junior rugby and playing 15 a side on a full pitch proved to be a challenging season for the squad. With coaches Ben Robinson and James Clarke in place pre season training saw the squad full of confidence. A few new players joined this season but the squad just managed to field a full side but rarely had the luxury of any subs. This is an area we need to address next season and set a goal to turn out a squad of 20 players on match days. The season started with 2 wins against Barnsley and Huddersfield YMCA) in their first 6 games, the defeats were spirited performances against Brodleians and Ilkley. The loss at Bradford and Bingley could have been a winable game but the squad arrived late, disorganised and with only 13 players. A good win 50 - 5 at Morley boosted the squads confidence. After Christmas the squad won three more games but some fixtures targetted as winable games were cancelled due the teams unable to field a side. This meant going into the pool and playing much stronger teams.
Although they only won 7 games the team spirit is great and next season will see further progress under the coaching of Ben and James. The squad needs another 4 or 5 rugby players to join pre season to ensure we have a squad of 20 players for every game. Mick Bruce is standing down as coach next season and it would be great if another parent could step up and give Ben and James a hand. We thank Mick and Debbie for all their help running the squad.
Next season the squad will enter the Yorkshire Cup for the first time. We did not enter the u13's this season as we felt and rightly so the squad did not have enough players for cup rugby. We will be advertising in the local free magazines, sending posters out to all the senior schools in the area to boost the squad.
The squad finished with a playing record P 16 W 7 D 0 L 9 F 310 A 412.
The top try scorers were Sam Burford-Eyre 17, George Heron 10, Harry Robinson 5.
Under 14's
Andrew Keighley gave a review of the season. The squad were short of players at the start of the season but with 4 or 5 u15's they were able to raise a side and play under 14/15's mostly against full under 15 sides. The season started well with a big 54-10 win over Baildon and a win at Colne and Nelson. At the Christmas break they had won 4 games and lost 5. After the break the squad had recruited enough players to run a pure under 14's and the under 15's also recruited well to be able to run their own team. In February the under 14's played their first pure under 14 game and beat Roundhegians 50-0. By the end of the season they had a squad of 22 players and were playing some attractive rugby.
The squad finished the season strongly winning 3 of their last 4 games and next season will see the squad continue to improve as some of the new players develop. We will enter the team in the Yorkshire Cup and providing they avoid a big gun early on should have a chance of a good cup run. Andrew has done a fantastic job with the help of Luke Dawrant but this squad needs three coaches to work with these lads. An ideal structure would be a backs coach and a forwards coach.
The squad finished with a playing record P 11 W 7 D 0 L 4 F 358 A 214.
The top try scorers were Richard Bullough 17, Tom Hammond 15, Lawrence Chan 10.
Under 15's
Phil Kershaw and Fraser Swarbrooke gave a review of the season. The plan for this season was to develop an under 14's team and we had no plans for an under 15's side. But as the season progressed under 15 players continued to arrive every week until after Christmas we felt there were enough players to split from the under 14's and run a pure under 15's. In February after the u14/15's game against Halifax we made the break and the squad played The Bees but lost 0-17 this was followed by a 70-5 win over Baildon and the boys were up and running to go on and win 5 and lose 5 games to the end of season. There are now over 25 players in the squad and some very talented lads.
Next season should see the squad continue to develop with each game. There will be some tough fixtures against well established junior sides and some fixtures they are more than capable of winning. We will enter the squad in the Yorkshire Cup/Plate/Bowl competition and look to put some players forward for West Yorkshire district trials. Phil will have some work committments on Sundays next season so we need another peson to step up and help Fraser. Phil however is able to continue coaching the lads on Fridays.
The squad finished with a playing record P 15 W 9 D 0 L 6 F 410 A 324.
The top try scorers were Rhys Town 21, Greg Roper 15, Lawrence Chan 6, Greg Roper was top points scorer with 166 pts. Unde 14' Richard Bullough scored 13 tries while playing as a combined u14/15 side.
