Minis Match Reports 2011 - 2012
Good set of results despite the cold wet weather
Match report Sunday 4th December
Meanwhile at Camp Copley the micros had over 20 training with new players joining each week.
Under 7's The Young Guns
A great effort from both teams in miserable conditions
The under 7’s welcomed a brave Selby team to a very cold ,windy ,wet and muddy Copley HQ.
Game 1 Rishworthians 10 - 8 Selby
Selby started the game with some fantastic rugby, scoring a great try in the corner from the first attack, Rishies hit back with Charlie Lovering scoring a wonderful solo effort. In the very difficult conditions , and with some very cold hands, a lot of tags where missed by both sets of players, which allowed a very open game with some great runs from both sides as they traded scores for the remainder of the first half.
In the second half Rishies step up there game a stopped Selby on a couple of attacks, taking 6 tags to give them the turnover ball. Rishies started to play some very good rugby, using the slightly less muddy wings to run in some strong tries, notably from Ewan Bell, Rhys Hunt and Lucas Fearnley. Charlie Rushworth had another strong game growing in confidence following on from his display last week. Leo Iribaren scored a trade mark try jinking passed 5 Selby players (and 3 puddles) to score in the corner. Jake Goldthorpe Smith put in another solid performance with 3 tries and some good tagging. Freddy Shield, Dagan Murray, Jobe Wilby and Ben Hall, all put in a great effort with some agile tagging and very strong attacking runs.
The coaches would like to thank all the players and their parents from both Rishies and Selby for showing great commitment on this very miserable morning.

Under 8's The Sharks and Tigers
Well done to both sides for trying to play in such testing conditions.
Selby arrived with two teams for an intended 4 way with Rishies Sharks and Tigers sides. Unfortunately the weather conditions forced both games to be stopped in the second half as it was too cold and wet to continue. Both sides found tagging difficult in the cold and wet conditions which resulted in two high scoring games. Well done to both sides for trying to play in such testing conditions.

Under 9's The Rams and Rhinos
Weather no obstacle to both committed teams
In conditions to make the faint of heart question the sanity of the game of rugby, the under 9's welcomed a strong Selby contingent for a pulsating game of rugby at Hollas Lane. The rain and cold were to prove no obstacle to both committed squads.
Game 1 Rishworthians Rams 15 - 10 Selby
Quarter 1
With the rain driving into both teams a close battle of rugby ensued. The conditions meant that this was not going to be a high scoring affair, and the tackles made by both teams meant that most of the half was spent in close quarters with little opportunities to stretch the legs. Some concerted effort from the Rams near the Selby line saw the ball spill out; Toby Laurie was the quickest to react and he scooped the ball up, dragging a couple of Selby tacklers behind him, and managed to power his way over the line for the only score of the half.
Quarter 2
Selby piled on the pressure in the second quarter keen to cross the game line but the Rams defence held firm. Great work from Emma McHugh ripping the ball out in the maul when Selby looked likely to score was crucial. Toby Laurie and Rafe Dolan looked a powerful combination in the heart of the backs making many hard yards when presented the ball. The tackling machine that is Alfie Connors proved he is turning into the find of the season.
Quarter 3
Not long after the restart of the game, with multiple player changes on both sides, Selby managed finally to breach the Rams defence. A hole appeared in the centre of the park and the Selby team scored a deserved try. The Rams though were still fully focused on taking the game back to the opposition and Toby Laurie stepped up again to score a try that re-established the Rams' lead.
Quarter 4
As had been the pattern of the game throughout this was another closely fought quarter. Toby Laurie managed to score his hat-trick of tries to extend the Rams lead. However all credit to Selby who just kept on coming, and despite some heroic work by Lewis Paxton-White, they managed to cross over for one final score.
Squad: Toby Laurie, Emma McHugh, Bobbie White, Lewis Paxton-White, Ben Gianotti, Dillon Hilton, Rafe Dolan, Alfie Connors, Patrick Rhodes, Ben Collins, Killian Smith, Max Knowles, Adam Woodcock, Jude Whitelaw
Tries: Toby Laurie 3

Summary: Really good results from a team that seemed to ignore the atrocious weather, and took the game to Selby matching them tackle for tackle. Fantastic running and tackling were the keys to success.
Under 10's The Meercats
Heavy rain and cold weather conditions greeted Rishies for their home tie with Selby at Hollas Lane last Sunday. Game 1: Rishworthians 55 - 35 Selby
The home side continued to press hard against a well organised Selby side and despite the conditions, Rishies continued to move the ball through their hands, exploiting the gaps in the visitors defensive line. Further scores for Rishies from Tom Georgiou (2), Nick Crane and Will Adams were exchanged with Selby as the visitors fought back with three further tries of their own. As conditions worsened, both sides continued to battle hard in the closing stages of the game. Once again tries were exchanged between the two sides with Rishies outscoring their opposition by three tries (Alex Sharpe, Nick Crane, Will Adams) to two. Both sides should be congratulated on a fine display of rugby in difficult conditions, but it was Rishies who eventually ran out winners in a closely fought game. Try Scorers : Oliver Brian, Will Adams 2, Tom Georgiou 5, Nick Crane 2, Alex Sharpe. Squad : Jack Marsden, Owen Witchell, Haydon Faulkner, Oliver Brian, Will Adams, Gabriel Moore, Alex Sharpe, Brandon Savage, Tom Threlfall, Edward Whitwam, Oscar Powell, Billy Smith, Thomas Atkinson, Nick Crane, Joe Wright, Henry Hilton, Tom Georgiou. Man of the Match The Squad
Both sides produce fine performance in poor conditions
Both sides battled hard in the early exchanges but it was the Rishies pack who seized the advantage with some excellent forward drives, counter rucking and scrummaging play. With the pack working well together, the home side were able to secure the ball and gain a greater share of the possession. This enabled Rishies to release their back line to good effect with some first class passing and running on to the ball from deep. Early tries from Oliver Brian and Tom Georgiou (3) put the Reds in front before Selby hit back with two tries of their own.

Under 11's The Destroyers
Originally The Destroyers were scheduled to host Selby, but due to their Yorkshire Cup committments this was cancelled and Huddersfield YMCA substituted at short notice. The game was played out in atrocious conditions with heavy rain falling for almost the entire match. Game 1: Rishworthians 7 - 17 Huddersfield YMCA
Half way through the half the deadlock was broken as YMCA finally forced their way over the Rish line. The conversion was missed leaving YMCA with a 5 - 0 lead, but shortly afterwards this was extended as from a lineout YMCA ran the ball along the line to cross in the corner for a try. This time the conversion was successful. Rish now came back in to the game with a determined spell of attacking play and were rewarded with a try. Good ground making runs from Jake Haynes, William Harker and Tom Gillespie took Rish to the YMCA 5 metre line, and Joe Stott finishes the move as he barged over the line. Tom Gillespie converted to bring Rish back in to the game at 12 - 7. Another even spell of play followed with neither side managing to add to their scores leaving the match finely poised at half time. Half Time Rishworthians 7 - 12 Huddersfield YMCA As the second half commenced in the unrelenting rain the pitch was begining to cut up badly and scoring chances were few and far between. Rish came close with a run from Tom Stott which was halted 5 metres from the YMCE line, and Nathan Donaldson brilliantly collected a high YMCA clearance kick in his own half to go on a fine solo run only to be hauled in to touch just short of the tryline. At the other end YMCA also had a chance to extend their lead with a good run down the wing, but second rowers Ben Burrows and Zak Rush combined to produce a good try saving tackle taking man and ball in to touch 2 metres from the Rish line. In the final minutes YMCA finally increased their lead when they used their large forwards to barge over from a lineout close to the Rish line. Again the conversion was missed, but Rish could not create any further scoring chances leaving YMCA with a hard fought victory. Well done to the entire squad for putting up good effort in such bad conditions, and also to all parents / family members who continue to support and encourage in all weathers. For the second time this season Dave Harker picked up the 'plank of the week' award making it good day all round for the Harker family with William claiming the Man of the Match award. Squad Ben Burrows, Henry Craven, Nathan Donaldson, Thomas Gillespie, William Harker, Jake Haynes, Toby Helm, Liam Hodgsondunn, Carrick Keighley Payne, William Robbins, Zak Rush, Joe Stott, Thomas Stott, Kian Wallace, Huey Walker, and Alfie Wormald. Man of the Match William Harker
Well done both the for putting up good effort in such bad conditions
Earlier in the season Rish had comfortably beaten YMCA in good dry conditions, but this time around it was clear to see that a running game would be very difficult to play, and the larger YMCA forwards would have the advantage on a very heavy pitch. In the early stages of the game the Rish pack battled manfully winning several scrums, and along with good tackling from the back division they held the opposition at bay. Equally YMCA were also tackling well and on the few occasions the ball was fed out to the Rish backs in an attempt to break through they were swallowed up by YMCA tacklers.
