The under 8s make it 2 wins out of 2
Rishworthians 18 - 12 Baildon
The sun shone brightly over Copley as the Old Rishworthian Under 8's faced Baildon in their first proper competitive game of the season. The game started with both teams evenly matched in the first third, coming to the first break 2 all.
However, Rishworthians showed none of the sparkle that had been present in their play in the 2008-09 season. After an inspiring team talk in the break Rishworthians threw themselves into the 2nd section and put up a much more respectable performance with tries scored and tags taken by most of the team.
Old Rishworthians entered the 3rd, and final, section of play 9-7 up but Baildon scored the first try to keep the pressure on. This galvanized Rishworthians they put their all into the final minutes of play and scored a total of 9 tries and took 30 tags in the final section. Final score was 18 to Old Rishworthians ? 12 Baildon.
Although the Old Rishworthians are not yet playing as well as they did at the back-end of the 2008-9 season, 2 wins out of 2 is a good start to the season for any team, and the quality of play will improve as the season progresses.

The under 9s get their season of to a great start.
Rishworthians 40 - 0 Baildon Rishworthian's ability to put the opposition down in the tackle and regain possession of the ball allowed them to play some fine flowing rugby and score some quality tries. They worked hard as a unit and all the players contributed to this impressive win. All the hard work during the extra training sessions definitely paid off and the players visibly grew in confidence as the game went on. A great start to the season and long may it continue. Try Scorers Carrick Keighley-Payne 4, Corey White 2, Nathan Donaldson, Tom Stott The effort award rightly went to the whole team for an all-round excellent performance. The Raiders get season under way with a good win.
Rishworthians 30 - 10 Baildon Rishworthians U10's hosted Baildon for their first match of the season. After some great training sessions and the addition of several new players, the U10 unit were a force to be reckoned with! In the first half, the front row combination of Sam Puddephatt, James Mc Hugh and Toby Muscat Baron in the scrum gave scrum half Vinny Maude a solid platform to work from. Maude got the ball away from the base of the scrum with ease to set up Will Symms for two tries in quick succession. Sam Puddephatt was also quick to exploit gaps in the Baildon defensive line with a brace of tries, taking the team into a 4 try lead at half time. The second half saw Baildon get on the score board with two quick tries as a result of lapses in concentration from the Rishworthian defensive line. Baildon would have scored a third try had newcomer and man of the match Morgan Smithies not made a fantastic covering tackle just before the attacking player touched down. From the resulting spilled ball, Puddephatt slipped a pass to Kallan Jamieson who weaved his way the length of the pitch to score. Callum Bell also got in on the action to finish off a fine solo run, adding to the tally and bring the first match of the season to a resounding victory for Rishworthians 6 tries to 2. Try Will Symms 2, Sam Puddephatt 2, Kallan Jamieson, Callum Bell Man of the match Morgan Smithies. Squad: Will Symms, Sam Puddephatt, Kallan Jamieson, Callum Bell, Morgan Smithies, James Mc Hugh, Toby Muscat Baron, Vinny Maude, Tom Craven,
A bad day at the office for The Reds.
The under 11's season got under way with the prestigious Land Rover Challenge at Leeds Carnegie. As usual the event was well attended by players and parents and it was thought that we may do well as we had avoided Sandal and Brods in the group stages. Unfortunately it was not a good day, rugby wise, for the Reds, who lost all three of their group matches. I don't know if it was the rousing, inspirational speech from coach Cockroft "It's not about winning its about enjoying yourself"?.that the players took literally, or poor coaching, but things did not go according to plan.
Rishworthians 0 - 5 Sheffield The Reds started the game as though they meant business and were dominating the scrum and the maul with scrum half Will McDonnell stealing the ball in the maul on two occasions. Jack Davis and Jonathan Wheatcroft used their size to good effect with some strong runs, and second rower Jamie Smith was busy in the rucks and mauls. Both teams were evenly matched and the second half continued the same way with Davis dragging the opposing winger in to touch. McDonnell managed to find space down the right wing with a run from deep indeed his own half before also being hauled in to touch. Sheffield took the spoils in the dying seconds when they stole the ball in a ruck close to the Reds line and managed to go over. Rishworthians 5 - 20 York Again the Reds started well with the forwards winning balls in the rucks and mauls which allowed quick ball and the opening score. Will McDonnell picked up from a ruck, managed to evade 3 or 4 tacklers and sprinted down the left wing to score in the corner. The lead was short lived as York hit back with a quick tap penalty and went over to level the score. Just before half time another good run from a York player was well snuffed out with a double hit from Charlotte Siddall and McDonnell banging the player in to touch. A good catch and return from full back Nathan Cooper at the kick off gained ground for the Reds, but it was York who went in to the lead after their fly half sold a superb dummy and strolled over. A fumble from the kick off saw York steal the ball again and canter over to increase the score to 15-5. The Reds heads were now down and York finished us off at the end when their player ran the full length of the pitch to score a solo try. Rishworthians 0 - 25 West Park Leeds The Reds tournament was now over and this final group game was a match too many with handling errors and poor defence evident. West Park scored three times before half time all down to ineffective tackling, and two further tries came in the second half. Mention must go to Jamie Highley in his first game for the club, who made an excellent try saving tackle in the dying seconds of the game. A very frustrating day after last seasons tremendous efforts. For some unknown reason last seasons rock solid defence has crumbled and to allow so many soft tries was disappointing to watch. We seemed to lack any cohesion in nearly all aspects of the game with the guys unable to find the spark that they had last season. Any way, that is out of the way, and next week we are at Moortown, where Steve will not be doing any motivational speaking, and where we will try to kick start our season. Thanks again for all attending and supporting the team.
