It was an inauspicious start to life in Championship North on Saturday for Old Rishworthians Development with a heavy defeat at Wharfedale. It didn't help matters with 15 players unavailable and another 5 taken by the 1st XV. Rishies began the game with only 8 regulars from last season, a number of R2R guys, a couple of debutants and a borrowed Dale prop called Paul.
Wharfedale got on the scoresheet within 5 minutes and after 30 minutes were 29-0 up, having scored 5 tries. The home teams strategy was to use the big boot of Dales veteran fly half Jonathan Davies, and keep us pegged back in our own half. Rish almost scored after Sam Bake put a lovely kick over the top but the Dale fullback won the foot race to the line. Rishies gained a lot of confidence from that and were awarded with a try after Luke Dawrant made good ground before Bake found Oli Marshall who broke the gap to score under the posts. Lee Atkinson added the conversion. Dale scored again before the half which made the score 36-7 at the break.
The second period was much like the first with another quick score from Dale, but excellent interplay from Bake and Marshall gave Bake another Rish try which he also converted. Soon after, Ben Rooney went down the left wing to score in the corner to make the score 48-19. Wharfedale had the final say with a further 2 tries to make the final score 60-19.
Though it was a comprehensive win for Wharfedale, the Rish coaches and players were far from downhearted, having given a decent account of ourselves with the players available. With players returning, we will hopefully be able to field a strong squad for the home game against Heath next weekend.
