Match Report Saturday 13th January - Championship North Merit League

The previous meeting between the sides earlier in the season saw a 34-13 score in favour of West Leeds. West Leeds have been table toppers of the Championship all season, and though they had a blip against Moortown the previous week, they showed their class against Rish with a display of well disciplined forward play, slick passing and fast flowing rugby. This is how Rish usually play but on this occasion we were outplayed.

Rish had a superb chance of taking the lead within the first minute, had a good pass from Sam Bake to Kurt Sutcliffe not been fumbled with the try begging. That was Rishies only real chance of the half with West Leeds taking control and bagging their bonus point try before half time.

Half Time West Leeds 0 Rishworthians

The home team edged further ahead within a few minutes of the restart and it wasn't until Rish were 34-0 down that we finally clicked. A couple of forced substitutions through injury depleted the Rish back line and with no back replacements we had 3 forwards playing in the backs! Richard Turner, now in the backs, made a great break, and further phases took play deep in the Leeds half. From a penalty, controlled phases released Sam Bake who jinked through a gap to go over.

Rish were now playing some good rugby and almost got a second when Josh Illingworth made a 50 metre break but his pass to Lee Atkinson went to ground. Then followed the try of the game. Superb interplay down the right side by numerous Rish players tore the Leeds defence to shreds, with the move finished off by skipper Kurt Sutcliffe with the try. West Leeds had the final say of the game with another try, making the final score 39-10.

A game of two halves with West Leeds dominating the first, but a different second half with Rish playing better rugby and two tries apiece. Next week we are playing our postponed game from December at home to Bradford Salem, and are looking to bounce back.

Tries: Sam Bake, Kurt Sutcliffe
