Match Report Saturday 28th January - West Aire Wharfe Merit League

Rishies match on Saturday at Warley was played down the hill on the 'graveyard' pitch, which slopes from left to right and from top to bottom. Take in to account the freezing miserable weather and quick open rugby wasn't on the cards.

Both sides took time to settle, but after a few good phases Rish took the lead from a scrum when Kurt Sutcliffe broke the defence and just managed to make the line. The home side were soon back on par with a similar try from the Vandals centre who brushed through some poor tackling to touch down under the posts. The conversion was made.

Vandals put us under intense pressure and increased their lead with a penalty in front of the posts. Rish eventually got their act together and good phases put pressure on the home defence. Quick ball from the breakdown, and good hands found Rhys Town who sprinted in from the 22. Unfortunately his conversion hit the upright, and at half time the scores were level at 10-10.

Half Time Halifax Vandals 10 - 10 Rishworthians

For the second half Rish made a raft of substitutions, including our 6 Colts, and straight away our tempo and intensity increased. Quick ball and strong rucking took play inside Vandals 22 where Gez Rolling used his strength to scramble over from close range. Rish had the Lions share of both possession and territory, and increased their lead after Kurt Sutcliffe hit the gap at pace to touch down under the posts, which Town converted.

As in most recent matches, Rishies again had a lapse of concentration and allowed Vandals to score a converted try, bringing the score back to 22-17. The guys switched back on and found themselves with a lineout 10 metres from the try line. A well controlled catch and drive shoved Vandals backwards and Greg Day at the back of the maul had the easy task of plopping over the line. Rishies final try was a team effort, with great rucking and passing, which was finished off in style by Oli Marshall. The conversion was added by Will McDonnell, making the final score 34-17.

Tries: Kurt Sutcliffe (2), Rhys Town, Ges Rollings, Greg Day, Oli Marshall
