Rish Development produced an excellent display of running rugby to inflict an emphatic 14 try rout of Otliensians at Copley. A squad size of 23 players gave us the opportunity to blood another couple of our successful Colts, with the addition of 17 year olds Callum Bell and Ben Sutcliffe to the squad.
Having had a couple of difficult matches in recent weeks, Rish couldn't have wished for a better start. Within the first minute Oli Marshall on the wing chased his own kick and won the foot race to dive on the ball over the line. Aggressive tackling and rucking, followed by slick handling put Marshall in for his second try in five minutes.
The home side were already looking rampant, and further backs interplay sent Lee Atkinson to the line for the try. Atkinson converted, first of 10 in the match. Forwards and backs then combined to send Kurt Sutcliffe through a huge gap for the bonus point try, and with the conversion Rish were 22-0 up after 15 minutes.
Rishies were now scoring at will. Firstly, Liam Phillips handed off 3 players before touching down, followed by Chris Flanagan releasing Sam Bake to score under the posts. Oli Marshall intercepted a long floating pass to sprint in for his hat trick, and after great play by Greg Day and Ben Rooney, Bake took the final pass to add his second. With Atkinson converting, the half time score was 50-0.
With 10 'finishers' on the bench, there were a few half time changes, but the intensity was not diminished. Another try soon appeared after Matthew Hunt-Brown went down the wing before his inside pass gave Atkinson a walk in try. Rish continued to test the already shredded Otliensians defence with accuracy of passing and putting men in to space at pace.
The visitors were leaving gaps all over and Liam Phillips found such a gap to run in unopposed from 40 metres. From the restart Ben Rooney set off on an 80 metre jinking run to score, and with Atkinson adding the conversion the score had romped to 71-0.
A couple of promising attacks came to nought, before Liam Normanton was sent down the blindside to cross in the corner. Then followed the highlight f the day and received the biggest cheer. Ever reliable Chris Fox popped out of a ruck in Rishies half and set off, making 30 (or 40, or 50) metres before being tackled by Otlieonsians last man! Sam Bake then made good yardage before being tackled, but his offload found Ben Sutcliffe who went in from close range for his debut try.
The final try came from a bullocking charge by Will Bowers who bounced through tackles before scoring. Atkinson added his 10th conversion, and with the ref stopping the match early, Rish has amassed a massive 90 points, but more importantly, no points conceded.
With good conditions underfoot, and a dry afternoon, the Rish guys managed to play with a speed and intensity that the coaching staff are trying to encourage. Hopefully we can take this forward in to the Cleckheaton game next week and then the play offs.
