The Development team went in to Saturdays game looking for a 4th victory on the bounce. Earlier in the season we had travelled to Moortown and inflicted their first home defeat for 2 years, and we were still looking for our first double of the season.
We had a few regulars unavailable this week, but at the moment the squad depth is impressive and we still managed to turn out a really strong squad, which included 8 players under 19 years old.
Rishies almost got off to the perfect start in the first minute when Olly Scrimshaw went 60 metres down the wing and was tackled short of the line. The following 10 minutes was all Rish, and when Moortown did get close to our line superb defence managed to turn the ball over. Rishworthians pressure paid off when a charge down was recovered and Liam Phillips dived over for the opening try.
Olly Marshall then made another charge down the opposite wing before great play by the forwards allowed Ben Sutcliffe to break through a gap for a try. Kurt Sutcliffe added the conversion. The forwards were working their socks off which allowed the rampaging backs to find space, and the third try was a team effort which was finished at the side of the post from Ben Sutcliffe. Namesake Kurt added the extras.
Rishies own lineout wasn't up to scratch but we did manage to steal one, and scrum half Will McDonnell put up a lovely box kick which Scrimmy chased down and collected before offloading to skipper Kurt Sutcliffe who scored under the posts. That was the bonus try, and the conversion made the score 26-0. In the last minute of the half Moortown were awarded a penalty try after supposedly taking a player out.
Rish continued in the same vein in the second half and another team try increased the lead further. From a lineout on the left, 5 metres from the Moortown line, a catch and drive took play forward before the ball went quickly through the backs for Olly Marshall to dive over in the right hand corner.
Rishies backs were having a field day and after more slick passing, Marshall was on hand to deliver the final pass for Lee Atkinson to dive in. Moortown then had a sustained period of pressure in our 22 but excellent defence kept them out, and when they did manage to go over, the guys were there to hold them up.
Rishies came straight back with a seventh try, again through the backs, with Scrimshaw getting the score. With time almost up Moortown got their second try after a shambles of a lineout close to our line saw the ball dribble over the line. A number of players dived on it but the referee gave the score to Town.
A well contested game of rugby, even though after half an hour the result was never in doubt. Moortown never gave up, but the entire Rishies squad put in a tremendous shift. The forwards were epic and the back line was rampant, which puts us in an excellent mindset for the home game next week against Wharfedale, and to overturn the 60-19 scoreline from the first game of the season.
