During the previous 2 matches Rish had a final minute win over Ilkley, and last week inflicted a first home defeat for 2 years over Moortown. The squad is progressing nicely and travelled to Otley in a confident mood. Rish however, were without a few key players due to work commitments and the England international, and after a few weeks when Otley struggled to raise a team, they managed to turn out a full squad against us. Incidentally there were no 1st team fixtures over the weekend.
So far this season Rish have gone behind within a few minutes in all but one of our 8 matches, and that trend continued on Saturday when Otley scored under the posts after 2 minutes. Rish then had a good period of pressure which resulted in a penalty in front of the posts, which Kurt Sutcliffe duly scored. Sutcliffe then put a lovely grubber behind the defence which Will McDonnell chased down and dived for the ball but the Otley fullback just managed to get there first. Rish went ahead when Sutcliffe popped over another penalty, but with half time approaching one of the Otley forwards was tackled close to the line, but got up, dived over and the try was given.
Otley went further ahead after a minute when their winger raced down the wing, bouncing off tackles to score in the corner. A further try took the score to 22-6, but then Rishworthians scored their only try of the game. After a good scrum, play went quickly through the backs and the final pass from Liam Phillips sent Sam Puddephat down the wing to score his second try in 2 games.
Sutcliffe added the conversion. Otleys next score came from Rish errors. A kick over the top was then hoofed on, and when Rish failed to secure possession, Otley did and scored. The game then took a turn after one of the Otley props unfortunately received a nasty scrotum injury, and we were down to uncontested scrums. Rishworthians has been doing well in the scrums, but now that they were contrived, Otley took advantage and let loose with their effective offloading game, and scored a further 3 tries in the last 10minutes to run out 39-13 victors.
After 60 minutes and 22-13, Rishies were every bit as good as Otley and had the momentum, but injuries and a number of guys playing out of position gave the advantage to Otley.
The whole squad yet again had a great game but a couple of guys stood out. Tom Jowle in the back row had an outstanding first half before dropping to centre, but teenager Ben Sutcliffe gave a man of the match performance in the backs. The Development squad, as the term suggests, is a fairly young team moving forward and are no way disheartened. We are enjoying this tough learning curve, playing against sides who have been in Championship North a long time. Each game we are gaining much needed experience and are receiving encouraging comments from opposing coaches. Another difficult fixture next week at home to second placed Keighley.
