2009 - 2010 Season

This season the 2ndXV will be playing competitive rugby in the Yorkshire 4 merit league. Paul Savage will be captain again this season (see the contacts page for Paul's details). Most of the fixtures are now arranged, there are just a few blank weeks to be finalised.

Last season the squad started well but then strugled in the second half of the season and finished fourth from bottom in the merit league. During the season Paul will be looking forward to the under 17's coming on stream to sample senior rugby as they reah their 17th birthday and help boost the strength of the squad.

We always require new players serious or social to join the club, anyone interested in playing 2ndXV rugby or would like to push for a 1stXV place just come down on a training night or a Saturday afternoon.

Match Preview and Training

Players please note the 2nd team is now training every week starting at 7.15 to 8.30 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with the 1st XV squad sessions run by Jamie/Cluffie. Any new players are welcome to attend.

Thornensians 7 - 19 Rishworthians 2ndXV

Rish 2nd team travelled to Thornensians bolstered by the welcome return of Bob Collins (2nd team vice captain) after his appearances for the 1st team. An enthused team took to the field with a positive outlook from the word go. The game started off quickly with Rishworthians pushing forward with a great run by Jez and passing the ball out to the backs. This set the tone for the match as Rishworthians took command of the pitch. For the 1st 20 minutes Rish looked in the best shape ever with solid passing, good support and a solid line out, with Ian Teasdale jumping and gathering the ball at every occasion. An early try by Lee Atkinson playing at 10 started the score line with his conversion adding to scoreline. Another excellent run by Jez enable the ball to pass across to Joe Billing for his try and Lee Atkinson converted.

Some half time changes enable the debut of Andrew Radcliffe at flanker who brought another element to the forwards leading by example with some solid tackles and staging. Rishworth then started to relax and some mistakes started to happen with some silly penalties being given away by players who know better! This seemed to rally the team and an amazingly poor pass to Anthony Shoesmith, which was 1 inch off the floor was collected and mid stride he pushed through 2 players and sprinted away to score a excellent try. The game then got scrappy with some frustrations coming out from both teams but Rishworthians held the upper hand and defended to the end of the match. We would like to thank James Kidd and Christian Hill who played there last matches for the club before travelling around the world and to Newcastle, we wish them the best and thank them for the effort from this year. (Even thought both of them got Sin binned...in there last match)

Man of the match combined - Will Brian / Anthony Shoesmith (Excellent play and commitment)
