Good first half by Rishworthians but Hills take second half
Old Rishworthians travelled to Doncaster to play Wheatley Hills and found themselves on the end of an 8 try to 2 defeat. The young team was dealt a blow just before kick off when Ryan Mudd withdrew and was replaced by Greg Day.
Playing against the wind in the first half the Copley men started at a pace which saw the ball switch from left to right and after 3 minutes Ethan Pollard scored a try in the corner which was well converted by Josh Kelly, playing in the centre. The home team had not been able to enter the visitors half but after 14 minutes Owen Gillvray kicked a penalty for Wheatley Hills following an off side infringement.
Old Rishworthian continued to look dangerous with the ball in hand and A J Boardman, making his debut, showed his pace by beating his man with a sidestep, gaining ground on the left and offloading to Gerard Rollins who scored a try under the posts which was converted by Kelly. Tom Andrews playing at outside half combined well with Boardman who was tackled into touch near the Wheatley Hills line.
Play then started to switch to the Copley men 22 and further pressure by the Wheatley Hills forwards saw another penalty given to the home side. Instead of kicking for goal, the home side elected to take a scrum and scored a try with their pack rumbling over the try line. Gillvray converted it. Old Rishworthian had two chances to score points, but Kelly’s penalty attempts were wide. Wheatley Hills scored a push over try just before half time converted by Gillvray, to make the half time score 17-14.
Playing with the wind in the second half the Copley men were confident that they would be able to gain a foothold and show how they could defeat the home side. However that did not take into account the size of the home forwards. 6 tries were conceded in the second half. One following a penalty try, one after poor tackling on the left wing, an interception try when Kelly’s pass to Boardman was intercepted on the Copley men’s 22, a pushover try. Laycock and McGillvray combined to score under the posts. No 8 Chris Blessed made yards breaking from the scrum and Old Rishworthians had no answer to his power.
The final score was 56-14 to the home side and Jon Bake can consider his team unfortunate to have conceded 6 tries in the second half. There are players who were not available but size is a commodity which cannot be obtained overnight. Yorkshire 2 has teams with large packs of forwards so a game plan needs to be offered which enables that every attacking move gains ground and/or points. Don’t forget this is a young side, willing to learn.
